Charles is:
1. He's a better surgeon
2. He's better looking (more handsome)
3. He smarter
4. He has class and taste (Know a good wine)
5. He has culture (Knows Mozart and classic literature)
6. Great accent
7. He just looks better with Margaret
8. He's Wealthy!
9. He looks like a real man in his dress uniform, not a pencil-necked geek!
10. He knows how to put Hawkeye and BJ in their place!

Intelligence and this: "10. He knows how to put Hawkeye and BJ in their place!" are why I fell in love with CEW initially. I was afraid he'd be just another foil for the other Swamprats, but the snake-in-Hawkeye's-bunk made me see the light, yeah!

You bring up many other good points too.

Another: Charles doesn't let Margaret rule the unit through him, like Frank let her. Prolly ticks her off no end too.

LOL@Oh, and he probably smells better too.

I adored Larry Linville, and i think he did a fabulous job re-creating Frank from the movie, but then brought the character even farther (seeing as he had a lot more time to do so than Robert Duvall did). But Frank himself? What a toad. Charles rules.

Charles isn't a hypocrit like Frank. Frank was always reading the bible, but then look how he would act. Charles admits he is not particularly religious....and yet stil has more ethics.

1. CEW has LIPS.
2. He is very intelligient
3. He loves his sister very much
4. He doesn't fool around with the nurses like Hawkeye does.
5. He has class something Frank never had
6. He isn't a stool pidgeon.
7. He doens't whine.
8. He is hot looking.
9. He would never fool around with another woman if he were married.
10. He doesn't look like a ferret.

It always amazed me that he isn't the male ho that Hawkeye is, its even more amazing that Hawkeye has 2 tent mates that are fairly opposite of him.

Maybe the writers were going for a different angle when they wrote the characters of BJ and Charles. Trapper was married but he fooled around with the nurses. I kind of like the contrast between Hawkeye and his tentmates.

I don't remember the episode name but Charles did fool around a bit. It was the one with the French woman. There was a scene in her tent where they kissed and it was left to the viewer as to what else happened.
