I was going through my M*A*S*H DVD's taking screencaps and I was shocked at the amount of personal comments they made about David's appearance. Not only was there comments about his hair, there was also comments about his weight.

Now over at The Stiers Place we've been noticing how David puts himself down regarding his weight. I can't imagine this sort of public put down would do his self-esteem any good.

Thoughts on this anyone?

Was this on the bonus dvd for MASH? I know on other web sites people have made comments about his weight. One idiot said since he is 6'4 he must weigh a ton being as big as he is.

I can't count how many interviews I have read where he makes some comment about h is weight. On one that i just posted he decribed himself as a bladder of lard. Even if he doesn't know the people making the comments it still hurts. He does have issues with his weight.

As someone who constantly has battled a weight problem I can understand how he would feel. People can be so cruel. Is he less than a person because he gained weight? How someone looks on the outside isn't as important to me as how they are on the inside. He is a wonderful, kind man that some people can't see because they are so obsessed about how he looks on the outside. When he is ready he will lose weight and if not they need to deal with it.

Sorry for rambling but this issue has been a pain in my side for years. At one point in my life I was 300 lbs. Thanks to supportive people and faith in myself I lost the weight. But let me tell you I had my share of people making comments about my weight. It is very hurtful. No wonder he likes doing voice over work instead of being in front of the camera. This way no one has to look at him.

I wish there was some way we all could email him and tell him not to let the weight or hair comments get to him. But from what I have learned about him he is too much of a gentleman to say anything.

I think Jenn that you're actually referring to the comments made to CHARLES by the other characters? Granted, David was playing the role, but I'm pretty sure the comments were directed at his character, not him personally.
LearsCordelia would probably be able to shed more light on this, being in the acting profession, but I'm pretty sure that any actor signing up for a show such as MASH would have a fair idea that these sort of lines would be in there.
It's not as though "personal" comments were confined to Charles, is it? How many times did Radar's lack of height get commented on? And what about Frank's lack of a chin and being called 'Ferret face'?
It goes with the territory. If an actor wasn't happy with it, he'd either leave, or not have signed the contract in the first place.

Yes, I was referring to the comments made about Charles and I understand that the comments were directed at the character as opposed to David personally. What I was trying to get at is that TV shows, ideally shouldn't make a big thing about a characters appearance whether it be height, weight or anything else because it is something that the actor can't change that easily. They should find something else to pick on that is more controllable such as a character's personality or a habit.

With David having issues with his weight, the comments made about Charles can't have helped. If David didn't have issues with his weight then and allowed these comments why has he made weight an issue more recentely?

He's made a couple of throwaway, self-deprecating remarks about his weight. I don't read that as meaning he has an "issue" with it. If he did, he'd hardly have been comfortable with the line he had in Frasier that went "I'm bigger and balder but I don't want to hear about it".
You do comedy for a living, this is what goes with the territory.
