Whilst watching the interview footage on the GFA set made me realise how different David's own voice was back then to the voice he gave Charles. I think it was quite impressive of him to have kept up that accent for six years without slipping back into his own accent.

Once in awhile I'll catch him saying a word or two in his own voice. But I didn't realize it was his own voice until Mash was over and I had seen him appear in other shows.

The only time I can think of where he slips, ever so slightly, with the accent, is the Letters eppy, when he says the line about "a child's heart" and you can hear him sound the 'r' in heart.
I was astounded when I first heard him in a different role - but then, that's what great acting is about.
It was years before I realised Jimmy Doohan was Canadian! (That's 'Scotty' in Star Trek for anyone who doesn't know)

He has such an ability to change his voice that very few actors are able to do.
I watched the episode of Frasier where he played the character of Leland. It took a bit to get used to hearing his normal voice or maybe he was doing another accent. It was totally different from the blueblood accent of CEW.

I was really shocked the first time I heard him talk in his own voice. I thought he talked like Charles all the time. I was a bit disappointed at first because I loved Charles' accent.

I know what you mean it was strange. Kind of like finding out your favorite actor who you thought was tall and had a full head of hair was in reality a short , bald guy who wore lifts and a toupee. I had to look a couple of time when I watched the Frasier episode and The Majestic to make sure it was him.
It just goes to show what a fantastic actor he is. In Cheap Detective, DOS did a version of CEW's accent. It wasn't as pronounced.

You're right he was playing a French guy. What was I thinking  Well I do have an excuse a friend let me borrow season 1 and 2 of Lost and I have been having a marathon watching them. The monster on the island stole my memory. ;D |
