This was on earlier today and it made me cry so much . I'd forgotten how emotional the episode really was. Bless You Hawkeye was also shown today and what a differnce between the two characters and the way their problems showed. Hawkeye was loud and OTT but Charles was quiet. I felt far more sorry for Charles. I just wanted to hug him and offer the comfort that I think he needed.

We were obviously both tuned in at the same time! (except that I didn't bother watching 'Bless you Hawkeye' again.) When I started rewatching MASH a couple of years back, I knew I liked Charles best - but it was 'The Life you Save' episode that finally pitched me completely over the edge! Once I'd seen him crying over that soldier I just wanted to hug the stuffing out of him. Wonderful episode (and so beautifully underplayed by David, in stark contrast to the overacting by Alan Alda in the preceding episode)

My dad wanted to watch the Hawkeye one. He got bored with 'The Life You Save'.
David played the role excellently (like he always does) and his performance in this episode excelled Alan Alda's performance in 'Inga' or any of those Hawkeye orientated episodes.

This one's on in 4 1/2 hours. Is this the ep where this pic comes from: www.charlesemersonwinchester.co.uk/DavidandHarry.jpg? I don't recall seeing that scene, altho I vaguely remember this ep. Looking forward to taping it, since it's where little brother is mentioned.

The pic is an out-take from 'Give and Take' (season 11) and it's in the book "The Last Days of MASH". Harry has fallen into David's arms because he has forgotten his lines again, and the pair of them were laughing so much they needed loads more 'takes' than usual to get the scene right. You will LOVE 'The Life you Save'. Triple-check your video recorder, this is one ep you don't want to miss!

OH MY GOSH, that was SOOOOO good!!
I was crying right along with David/Charles as he held that soldier's hand to him, it was such a side of Charles we don't normally see.
I was kinda pissed the way BJ lit into him. I know Charles was rather obsessing on the guy they'd saved, but BJ hadn't heard the bit about the little brother like the kid in the cot did, and he tears into Charles quite unfairly.
Show's back, the one-hour ep That's Show Biz, with that one girl? Ellie? That CEW is taken with.

Bet you enjoyed the way Margaret came tearing out of her tent to tell him off though! And yep, 'That's Shobiz' is the episode with Ellie. Enjoy!

I don't recall Margaret doing that!
Probably a scene that got cut out, like they cut the kissing scene in "Mr and Mrs Who"--I could NOT believe that, when they skipped right over the kiss!! The whole reason for WATCHING that ep, to see his kiss, rowr rowr.

It must be really annoying, finding out you're missing good (and sometimes important) scenes. How on earth could they cut the kiss out of 'Mr & Mrs Who', that's part of the whole plot development, that Charles discovers he likes her when he's sober too!
Re the scene in 'The Life you Save', when BJ has had his set-to with Charles, Margaret barges out of the tent as Charles walks away, and shouts at BJ "Why are you yelling at that poor man? He's obviously troubled - I'm trying to think of ways to boost morale, and you're out here tearing it down!" BJ replies "You give him a boost - I've got 250 pounds of laundry to fluff and fold!" Cut to scene in the OC where Margaret goes to talk to Charles, and ends up yelling at him herself.

Going back to the comment about BJ, I noticed that everyone else becomes concerned about Charles - except BJ. Margaret's the most obviously worried, and Potter gives the impression of being quietly frantic when Charles is at Battalion Aid and in danger of being killed. Even Hawkeye says to Potter that "Winchester isn't firing on all cylinders" - but BJ just twitters on about his wretched laundry!

I wonder why the writers did the character of BJ that way? It seems a bit out of character.
It did show a side of Charles you rarely got to see. I think we all have wondered the same thing when a loved one had died like Charles did.
David was the only actor who could have pulled it off. Alan Alda had that one where he was sneezing etc because of a soldier coming in with moldy wet clothes that caused a memory from his past to come back. It was so overacted that I will turn the channel or skip to the next episode on the dvd.
