I liked the way they did the kissing scene between Charles and Martine. Unlike modern kissing scenes (that tend to look a bit fake) this one looked very real (for a staged kiss) and it wasn't too long. I think this was the best ever on screen kiss. I think they had enough to suggest what was happening (and what was going to happen) but not too much so as to bore you.
If I was the actress playing Martine I'd savour every moment of that kiss.

I've always loved that scene. As you said, it doesn't look staged at all. I think I'd passout or turn into a babbling fool if I were in Martine's position. ;D

If it had been me, we'd still be rehearsing ;D!!! "ooh, don't think we quite got it right that time, can we try one more take? " 'Lucky cow!' is the phrase that springs to mind when I watch that scene. And you're right, it's a terrific kiss! (Tho' the kiss Majel Barrett got in 'Half a Life' looked pretty good too)

At the end (where Martine said goodbye) it made me cry when I saw Charles was crying . He seems to have that effect on me. According to an old friend (a make up artist for Casualties Union) Actors are made to look like they're crying in two ways. 1. Irritants are put near the actors eyes to make them produce tears. They just add the sound effects. 2. Some actors can cry on demand. What do you think is the case for David when Charles is crying?

According to a post on David's 'Yahoo' group (a little while ago) from a lady who is married to one of David's cousins, "David can cry at the drop of a hat" - so I think when we see his character cry, he's crying for real. Ahh - doesn't that make you want to just cuddle him even more?

He's just so adorable. He has that effect on me too -- when I see him cry, I immediately start filling up.

I thought Martine was so pretty I'd date her no questions asked. Charles was a fool to end the relationship.

I almost hate to admit this, but I dont' remember the crying bit... I remember WHY he felt he couldn't continue with her.
I'd been pondering that myself, but we know he has sex at least in Mr and Mrs Who, right?
I mean, pondering as far as my story goes... I think it's the fact she was (gasp!) living in sin with someone, that was so outside his paradigm he couldn't deal with it. Hell, it was still shocking in the 70's!
I know I'm wandering a bit off topic, but this does concern Martine and Charles, and Margaret and Charles, after all. Oh, nm, I'll address anything to do with my story in the fan fiction area. But this episode sure gave me food for thought, as far as staying in character, which I always strive to do.

I'd been pondering that myself, but we know he has sex at least in Mr and Mrs Who, right? Well, there was 'Meredith' in Tokyo (who he wrote the letter to in 'Potters Retirement'); Lorraine in 'Temporary Duty'; Sooni in 'Aint Love Grand'; Donna in 'Mr & Mrs Who'; Ellie in 'Thats Showbusiness' (well, what did you think he meant by "I may have another roll in my barrel"!!?); and Martine. Ummm... think that's all of them, unless anyone can think of any others?

Yeah, but did he actually have sex with them??
I think Martine and Donna?
Wasn't sure about Lorraine, I thought they were just sparkin'.
And Sooni, I thought he had her around more for companionship? The way she finally gets so frustrated with him, like, When we going to have some action, Joe?
And why do I keep asking questions?

You could read the Lorraine relationship either way, I guess, but she was there for a week and they clearly spent a lot of time together. Given that they both appeared to be 'ready, willing and able', why not? And with Sooni, don't forget that he was out all night when he first met her, and arrived back at the Swamp whistling

"And with Sooni, don't forget that he was out all night when he first met her, and arrived back at the Swamp whistling" That's true, good point! I love at the end of the one with Lorraine, when she compliments him and he automatically wants to go "Of course" but has to force himself to simply accept her compliment and say "Thank you."

I always interpreted that as Charles being suddenly unsure about exactly what she was referring to (and therefore evidence that they had indeed slept together). But maybe that's just me and my gutter mind!
