This is an episode that I feel shows the caring side of Charles. He was there for Hawkeye when he needed a friend and sympathised with him. I also felt that Charles was a little bit upset about the relationship with his own father. The episode got me crying

Charles is given some nice interaction with both Hawkeye and BJ in this ep. Don't forget that Hawkeye actually rejects his efforts to be sympathetic at first ("one of the things I like about our relationship is we've never let sympathy get in the way"), but Charles is still there for him when things get worse. (Incidentally, this must be one of the very few episodes where Hawkeye doesn't go running to BJ at the first sign of trouble). The insight into the Winchester household is fascinating - so much conveyed (and implied) in just a couple of sentences.
With BJ, there's the fun of joining forces to put the Marines' star bowler out of action. I love the way the two of them almost finish each others sentences, it shows they have a much better rapport than they'd ever admit to. And in the last scene, the two of them are clearly having a civilised, friendly conversation (before Hawkeye comes in to the OC).
One other thing about this episode is that it shows how fond of the 4077th Charles has become - this is his unit, and there's no way a bunch of Marines are going to beat them again. When he first arrived, I don't think he'd have cared enough to suggest using those blue pills (sorry, forgot what they were called).
