Charles looks so good in this episode - especially when he's wandering around the swamp in that new jacket and unbuttoned shirt ;D
But watching it again today, I realised that Hawkeye, for all his bleating about Charles "robbing" the Koreans, does absolutely nothing for them! In fact, Charles does more for them than Hawkeye does, since he at least gives them something (albeit only 10 cents on the dollar) for their otherwise worthless scrip. And he gives it in cold hard ordinary cash, which would probably have been worth more to them than its face value anyway. All Hawkeye does is make sure Charles ends up no better off (which, once he's got over his initial annoyance, isn't going to bother him much). And the money Hawkeye gets from Charles doesn't even go to a worthy cause - he uses it to cover his own backside because he's been careless with someone else's money! When the stolen money is returned, Hawkeye tells Mulcahy to give it to the orphanage. If he were really interested in helping the Koreans that Charles "robbed", surely he ought to suggest giving it to them (via Mr Chang the tailor). Captain Sanctimonious doesn't really come out of it that well when you think about it, does he?

Yet another good reminder that Hawkeye is not the infallible saint he'd liked to believe (and have others believe) he is. I like flawed characters; even when they don't always realize their flaws, or even if they develop an awareness of their flaws gradually. That's partly why I like Charles so much. What other people perceive as unredeemable characteristics to his nature, I find to be endearing fallibilities.
Hawkeye wears rose-colored glasses ALL THE TIME when it comes to himself; though he has no trouble pointing out Charles's mistakes. And other people's.
I was reminded of how awful Hawkeye treated Charles in "The Light That Failed," when I read your post. Charles tried, quite a few times, to make amends, and Hawkeye was so self-righteous it made me sick.
