I had the chance to rewatch this the other day. I'm glad the C/M aspect to this was posted on the C/M website, because it really is a very, very interesting aspect to the beginning of their relationship (and I mean that in more than just a romantic way). I think it really set the tone for the rest of the show, when it came to these two anyway; they would constantly have this slightly annoyed banter with overt undertones of affection and adoration; simultaneously loving and "hating" each other.
It's been my experience that only the people who truly feel something for one another try their hardest to convince others, and themselves, otherwise. I've been guilty of it on numerous occasions.
I just love that they were both convinced Sidney thought there was an attraction there, yet they were the ones inferring it, not him.

I've always been dumbfounded as to why they never pursued that storyline. It was a perfect introduction a relationship that could have made for some great episodes.

I honestly thought that something was going to happen between them after watching this episode and perhaps the writers thought about it but changed their minds.

I honestly thought that something was going to happen between them after watching this episode and perhaps the writers thought about it but changed their minds. I vaguely recall reading an article somewhere that said just that - Charles was initially supposed to take Burns' place in more ways than one, but the writers (or, more likely, producers) decided not to pursue the idea. Charles looks so cute when he's being indignant though, doesn't he?

Didn't they avoid making C and M an item because they didn't want a repeat Frank and Margaret?

So, did he touch his nose?

I could see them not wanting a repeat Frank & Margaret, but they could've just done something like slowly hinting at feelings they might have for one another (which they sort of did, whether they meant to or not) and really developed it in the last season. Of course, everyone interprets it differently, but I always feel that GFA left the door open for C/M. Either way, it definitely didn't seem to hint at H/M.
As far as Charles touching his nose...age-old question, I guess. Charles was truly a professional when he was in the OR, so I highly doubt he would've, unless it was purely an accident. I'm inclined to believe, though, that he might have made some sort of gesture which appeared, to Margaret, to be him touching his nose.
I often bemoan some of the continuity errors on this show, but I like that in GFA, they referenced this moment when Charles & Margaret were having their spat. It was quite funny.

The more I think about this, the more annoyed I get. Not so much about how the writers handled it, but how the H/M shippers act like we're supposed to "naturally" assume those two belong together. I know we're not supposed to flame here, but Alan Alda is not an attractive man. Top it off his character was know for being drunk, unkempt and a womanizer. Who the H*** thinks that is sexy?

*puts the admin hat on*
The rules regarding flaming refer to the flaming of members and staff and not any of the M*A*S*H characters and actors. There is an additional rule that forbids criticism of David Ogden Stiers and Charles Emerson Winchester.
*takes admin hat off*
The assumption that H/M were supposed to be an item annoys me too. Real C/M shippy moments like the one in War Of Nerves have been ignored.

Even though it would be quite charming if there was a C/M relationship, it just seems really unlikely that the writers/producers would allow that to happen and ruin the on going hints of the H/M relationship. Though I think that it would be splendid if Margaret had to choose which one and such..... though I have to disagree the commits made about what women would find Hawkeye attractive.... yes he is all those things but also funny, kind, and has lots of feeling. So I can see why some people would.

If there are ever any 'hints' of HM, it was unintentional on the part of the writers. Here's what Alan Alda had to say about 'Comrades in Arms': "[Hawkeye and Margaret are] the worlds most unlikely couple. Normally they're barely able to tolerate each other, but one night during a shelling they're both so scare, lonely and vulnerable that they fall into each other's arms. They wake up the next day both desperate to ditch the ridiculous mistake sitting next to them" (my italics). Certainly there are no HM 'hints' in 'War of Nerves' - which is what this thread is supposed to be discussing!

Regarding Charles touching his nose, I don't think he actually touched his nose. I agree with mybackpages in that he probably did some sort of gesture which made it appear that he'd touched his nose. Admittedly since I first watched the episode I have noticed that Charles does touch his nose a fair amount of times throughout the series.
Why would Margaret have been paying him that much attention if she wasn't attracted to him?
