The first time you saw him ?
The first time was Fade In, Fade Out, I just loved him, he was a conservative bad boy that could handle himself with Hawkeye and BJ.
He came across as snotty but knew what he was doing.

To be honest, i don't really remember the very first time I saw him - it was over 20 years ago! I do recall that he was my favourite character at that time though. (As an aside, MASH episodes were still on the first run at the time, and I used to watch them in a packed Hall of Residence TV Room, as I was at college at the time. MASH and Star Trek were the only two programmes that could fill the TV room!) Years later, when Paramount were re-running the series from the beginning, I tuned in from the start, as I knew there were loads of episodes I'd never seen. And as soon as Charles appeared, I thought 'oh yes - I had good taste the first time around! He's cute!'

It was in 2002 and I first started watching M*A*S*H when Season 4 was showing so Charles wasn't my first M*A*S*H love.
When Charles appeared I first thought he was a bit of a spoiled brat that was incredibly pompous and arrogant but by the end of the episode I began to see that he was more than that.
I didn't always have such good taste unfortunately but I was 16 when I started to watch the show so you can make allowances for my bad taste.

My first thought was, "Who can they possibly get to replace Frank?". I fell in love from the start. The scenes where he shows up Hawkeye and BJ just won me over. The icing on the cake was when he put the snake in Hawkeye's bed.

I remember first watching MASH in the 80's, and I always thought Charles was English with an English accent! I always laugh about that now.....being a little bit older and wiser....well, certainly older!
However, I always liked Charles.....I liked the way he could get one over on Hawkeye and BJ...unlike poor old Frank, who always seemed to end up with egg on his face!
Looking back and re-watching MASH now, I just adore everything about Charles....even his non-British accent....LOL!! I think he has a very sexy voice.....

I'm with Jerseygirl: I liked him early on in "Fade Out, Fade In," but the snake in Hawkeye's bed was the clincher. I was watching with some trepidation, figuring he'd just be a replacement Frank, a foil for BJ and Hawkeye, but when he proved his mettle and put the snake BACK into Hawkeye's bunk (after H. put it in HIS bunk originally), I whooped and yelled YES! This guy is awesome!
