There's a message on MASHtalk at the moment addressing the Hawkeye haters. The post asks how people can enjoy M*A*S*H but dislike Hawkeye?
Opinions and thoughts everyone.

That question could only be asked by people who believe MASH revolves around AA/Hawkeye, and don't see any merit in the rest of the characters. The whole point about MASH was that it was an ensemble piece, and always worked best when the characters were playing off each other. That's why that 'Hawkeye' episode doesn't work (well - that and AA's ham acting). Hawkeye is probably my least favourite character (though BJ runs him close sometimes), but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate some of the very funny moments he has and contributes to. What I can't abide is the "look at me" stuff, such as the stupid Groucho/flippers routine and that ghastly off-key singing. Eck!

I don't know about you guys but AA aka Hawkeye never let the character change and progress. Margaret started the series as a witch on wheels and by the end she was the complete opposite. But Hawkeye started the series as a booze guzzling womanizer and he ended the same way. Yes they threw in that Korean woman who used to be rich episode but his character was the same. This series was supposed to be an ensemble but AA tried to make it where he was the star and the others were incidental. To be honest, I have seen some of AA's other work and he does them with the same tricks he used as Hawkeye. In the movie Manhattan Murder Mystery with Woody Allen he played the character like Hawkeye. He kept trying to hook up with Diane Keaton.
Whereas, DOS has done so many different parts and you don't see Charles in them. In my opinion he is a finer actor than AA. And DOS did it without the benefit of having a daddy in the business to open doors. Sorry for ranting but in many ways AA tried to make it the Hawkeye show instead of MASH.

You got that right Marianne, how many times has DOS played a judge or Dr, each character was acted differently, not the same ol' same ol'.

This is the big mystery for my, why isn't DOS a more well known actor? Maybe the answer is in a comment he made. They asked him if there was anything he wanted. He said more movies and tv that were for older people. Most of what is out there now are cast with 20 somethings and the storylines are about that age group. To see what a great actor he is watch the MASH episodes or any other for that matter. Even if he is in the background with no lines he is still acting. You can tell by his facial expressions and body movement.
