When Dupree and Lorraine arrive at the 4077th Charles looks around (he's putting up the Boston sign) and he starts hammering. He missed the nail and the wood and hit his hand instead. I've got a screen cap of this which I will post to show you (sorry about the image quality)

I don't recall that scene, of him hammering "Boston" up there, and that's one of the episodes I always make sure I see!
I remember when it was first shown. My sis and I were both becoming a bit smitten with Charles. I actually didn't SEE it the first time it was shown, but sis called me all excited. She said, Wait'll you see this episode of MASH, Charles does something rather surprising. I asked her what it was. She told me the whole ending, how Charles goes, Pierce, I never thought I'd say this...but BOY did I miss you! and hugs the stuffing out of Hawkeye. I was like WHAT?? She was laughing so hard she could hardly talk. that's got to be one of the best endings in the whole series, when BJ and Charles grab Hawkeye like that!
Darn, I forgot my original reason in writing. Do you UK viewers know who George Lindsay/Roy Dupree is? That's Goober Pyle from The Andy Griffith Show. He's Gomer Pyle's cousin (don't know if you knew Gomer went on to have his own TV show).

The scene was at the very beginning. Perhaps the TV network cut it out. It wasn't my favourite scene in that episode.
I liked the scene at the end where Charles throws his arms around Hawkeye too. It shows that Charles has already changed in personality quite a bit as I certainly don't see him doing that in his early days.

I am going to have to watch the ep again, just to see that! Amazing, I've see this particular episode a lot (it's a favourite one, with Hawkeye not being in it very much) and I'd not noticed him hit his hand with the hammer. (And David's dad a carpenter - he can't have been too impressed!! ;D)

Perhaps David's dad didn't watch this episode so he didn't see David hit his hand. Did David's dad watch M*A*S*H or any of those other shows he's been in?

I shouldn't think you'd have been able to tear either of David's parents away from the screen while he was on! (And I should think David probably mentioned hitting his hand while filming this ep anyway). I've seen interviews with David re the Trek ep 'Half a Life' where he says he watched it with his parents - generated quite a discussion, apparently.

(And I should think David probably mentioned hitting his hand while filming this ep anyway). He probably would have mentioned it to his parents actually. I know that some parents of actors don't watch their child on TV but they are probably in the rarity. I got the impression from 'Memories of M*A*S*H' that Ken and Maggie Stiers are very proud of what David's achieved and I don't blame them.

Being a trekker, albeit a classic Trekker, I still loved it when David was on there. That was awesome, of course!
Was him hitting his hand an actual blooper, or did he (Charles, not David) do it from being distracted by Lorraine walking by?
And just how far did he and Lorraine get any way? I really liked her character. That's her in the picture, isn't it?

No it wasn't Lorraine in the picture. She was just arriving in the jeep with Dupree.
I guess it could have been the fact that Charles was distracted by the arriving jeep but I wasn't sure.

'Half a life' gets my vote as the best Next Gen ep - just ahead of 'Relics' I don't think Charles was supposed to hit his hand - there was no reference to it in the episode at all, and I don't even remember him reacting! He was distracted by a jeep pulling into the compound with Roy and Lorraine in it (so that's not her walking past, that's one of the nurses). How far he and Lorraine got is kind of left to the viewer to decide. Given that he was so bashful at the end when she told him he was "one of a kind" my vote's with them having gone 'all the way'. As I think I've posted elsewhere, she was there for a week, and they were both clearly 'ready, willing and able.'

I think he'd have reacted more if he'd hurt himself. I noticed that he looked at his watch to make sure he hadn't broken it.

I dunno, he may've hurt the hell out of it, and just kept going. I know some actors can do that.
One example of "hurt" and continuing on: While filming "Devil in the Dark," one of my favorite Trek episodes, I mean, literally in the middle of filming, Shatner learned his father had passed away. He kept on going thru the day's scenes, and the crew was just amazed that watching him on-screen you'd have no idea that something so tragic in his personal life had just happened.
So, maybe David wanted to save the scene and just ad-libbed and kept going. That's what I suspect. I'm pretty sure it must've hurt like the dic kens.

Just rewatched this scene in slow-mo, on zoom, and he doesn't hit his arm once, he hits it at least twice - once on the arm just above his watch, once on his watch, and he then appears to come close to hitting his hand. He then checks his watch, as CG said, presumably to make sure he hadn't smashed it, and then the scene cuts to BJ and Radar standing by the jeep. He wasn't hammering very hard, but I'd be surprised if he didn't get bruised!
(Best example I heard of an actor carrying on after being hurt was in the John Wayne version of 'The Alamo', when Lawrence Harvey fired the cannon on the ramparts - when it recoiled, it rolled over his foot, and he didn't bat an eye.)
