In Dear Comrade at the end Charles follows Kwang out of the swamp barefoot. After Potter has given Kwang his certificate he invites everyone over to the Officers Club for a drink. Charles walks across to the OC and as he does you can see that his feet are really dirty and almost black. I don't think that being barefoot outside for that short amount of time would make his feet that black.
